A Valentine for "You"

Updated: Feb 6, 2022

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. I have always seen this day as a day of giving, sort of like Thanksgiving. In elementary school, we kids gave each other candy hearts and Valentine’s cards. And, we got to taste different types of chocolates.

We looked forward to this holiday with excitement because of the goodies we found in our crafted hearts that hung on the classroom wall. The teacher always received the biggest hearts from us kids. Do you remember those years?

I also remember, when I was several years older, being single and dreading this holiday. That wasn’t fun – and I’m grateful that it was not so memorable. Can you relate?

At this stage in my life, I see Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to gift my “self” with some extra special care.

Most people see this day as a holiday specifically for lovers. That’s a tricky notion when you consider that many of us are without a “significant other” with whom to share it. Even those among us who will be celebrating Valentine’s Day with a partner may be finding the day less of a celebration than a burden. (“I don’t have time for this!” – or – “I don’t know what to get ‘fill in the blank’!”)

I have come to realize that Valentine’s is the perfect excuse to take care of “you”. If you are single, what about making it a spa day – a “me day”? Devote any part of it – or all of it – to some special care. Make it about you – and about giving – by gifting yourself (and, maybe, someone else) with massage therapy; it’s perfect for anyone.

Aside from the obvious (relief from the aches and pains of daily life), massage is a gift of time. I like how one of our clients framed it, “I came here to re-center.” Life’s stress can get the best of us sometimes. Think of massage, then, as reconnecting your mind, soul, and body.

In an article posted on chopra.com that I came across while researching this article, I found this quote about spiritual self-care, “Plenty is said about the importance of nurturing the physical body through diet and exercise, but the spiritual body is often forgotten.” Massage therapy is a way to integrate the nurturing of our bodies with caring for that elusive thing we call “spirit”.
